MotiveWave vs NinjaTrader

MotiveWave and NinjaTrader are both charting platforms that futures traders use for order flow, replay, and strategy testing, which is why they're often compared. They're built on different models. MotiveWave is desktop software you lease or buy by edition, and it trades through a broker you connect. NinjaTrader is futures-first software whose charting, backtesting, and simulation are free, alongside its own affiliated brokerage.

The useful question isn't which is better, but which fits how you trade. This page compares the two dimension by dimension and says when each makes more sense; it does not rank them.

Quick answer

  • MotiveWave fits a desktop trader on Windows, macOS, or Linux who wants charting, tiered order-flow tools, and backtesting in one application, trading through a broker of their choice among 30+ connections. Editions are leased monthly or bought outright, and market data always comes from the connected provider.
  • NinjaTrader fits a futures-first trader who wants charting, backtesting, and simulation at no software cost, web and mobile apps, and its own affiliated brokerage. Order Flow+ and Level I CME Group and EUREX data come included once a NinjaTrader brokerage account is funded.
  • Neither is a universal winner. The real differences are your operating system, your choice of broker, how you pay for order flow, and whether you'll fund a NinjaTrader account.

Getting order flow on each platform

On MotiveWave, order flow depends on the edition. Community, Standard, and EW Lite include base tools: Volume Profile, VWAP, and a basic DOM. The full Order Flow Studies Pack, with footprint charts (Volume Imprint) and Market Profile/TPO, and the Advanced DOM are documented for the Order Flow, PRO, and Ultimate editions. MotiveWave also documents Time & Sales, but which editions include it isn't established. The lowest-priced route to it is the Order Flow edition, at $49/month or $595 one-time.

On NinjaTrader, order flow depends on your account. Order Flow+ is complimentary with any funded NinjaTrader brokerage account, and existing Lifetime license holders already have it. Without a funded account, it's a standalone add-on at $59/month. NinjaTrader's help guide names eight tools (Cumulative Delta, Delta Bars, Market Depth Map, Price On Volume Bars, Trade Detector, Volume Profile, Volumetric Bars, and VWAP), while its current support article lists six, without Delta Bars or Price On Volume Bars. We report both rather than choose.

The two routes aren't priced the same way, so there's no single cheaper answer. MotiveWave charges for software and leaves data and execution to your broker. NinjaTrader charges nothing for the software but ties included order flow and data to funding its brokerage. For what footprint, DOM, cumulative delta, and volume profile actually show, see our Order Flow guide.

What you pay

MotiveWave prices its software. NinjaTrader prices live trading. Each structure is laid out below with what it unlocks.

MotiveWave editions

  • CommunityFree, permanently

280+ studies, drawing tools, the Java SDK, Replay Mode, and base order-flow tools (Volume Profile, VWAP, a basic DOM). No live trading. Mobile access is unclear: the pricing page lists the Mobile App with Standard, the edition chart marks it for every edition.

  • Standard$24/month, or $245 one-time

Adds live trading through a connected broker, Advanced Replay, and Cloud Workspaces. The pricing page also lists the Mobile App here.

  • Order Flow$49/month, or $595 one-time (or 4 payments of $175)

Adds the full Order Flow Studies Pack, Advanced DOM, and a Trade Copier.

  • EW Lite$89/month, or $1,395 one-time (or 4 payments of $415)

Adds an Elliott Wave tools pack on top of Standard, without the full order-flow pack.

  • PRO$99/month, or $1,495 one-time (or 4 payments of $445)

Adds multiple broker connections, strategy creation and backtesting with optimization, and the full order-flow toolkit.

  • Ultimate$159/month, or $2,295 one-time (or 4 payments of $685)

Adds the most advanced Elliott Wave tools, an Elliott Wave scanner, and Hurst Cycles on top of PRO.

A lease renews automatically and includes updates while it's active. A purchased license includes one year of updates and support; after that, you keep the version you have or buy another year, from $55 (Standard) to $295 (Ultimate). A 14-day trial of the Ultimate edition needs no credit card and drops back to Community if you don't buy.

NinjaTrader account plans

  • Free$0/month

Commissions of $0.39 per micro and $1.29 per standard contract. A $35 fee applies if you log in but place no live trade within 30 days.

  • Monthly$99/month

Commissions of $0.29 per micro and $0.99 per standard contract.

  • Lifetime$1,499 one-time, or 4 payments of $499

Commissions of $0.09 per micro and $0.59 per standard contract.

Upgrading beyond Free requires a live NinjaTrader brokerage account. Exchange, clearing, and NFA fees apply on every plan. NinjaTrader changed its pricing in August 2026; these figures come from its support articles as of September 28, 2026.

Market data

MotiveWave doesn't include market data in any edition. Real-time and historical data come from whichever broker or data provider you connect, so what data costs depends on the provider you choose. NinjaTrader includes a free two-week trial with live CME Group Level II data. After that, a funded NinjaTrader brokerage account includes Level I CME Group and EUREX data, and NinjaTrader lists its CME Group Level II bundle at $48/month.

Brokers and execution

MotiveWave is not a broker. From the Standard edition up, it places live orders through one of the 30+ brokers and data providers it connects to; the free Community edition can connect for data but can't trade. NinjaTrader's live trading and clearing run through its affiliated, separately regulated brokerage, NinjaTrader Clearing. NinjaTrader Desktop also documents connections to external brokers and data providers, including Rithmic, Continuum, and Interactive Brokers. We found no equivalent documented list for NinjaTrader Web or Mobile, so that connectivity shouldn't be assumed there.

Backtesting, replay, and simulation

MotiveWave's Replay Mode, for stepping back to a date and replaying historical data, is available from the free Community edition up, and Standard adds Advanced Replay. Building and backtesting systematic strategies, with optimization, requires PRO or above. Custom indicators use its free Java SDK.

NinjaTrader's Strategy Analyzer runs NinjaScript strategies through backtest, optimization, and walk-forward optimization modes, as part of the software NinjaTrader describes as always free. Market Replay steps through historical data tick by tick; whether it requires a funded account isn't established in the documentation we reviewed. Neither platform's testing tools predict live results.

When MotiveWave makes more sense

  • You use a Mac or Linux. MotiveWave runs natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux. NinjaTrader Desktop requires Windows.
  • You want to keep your own broker or data feed. MotiveWave connects to 30+ brokers and data providers, and trades through them from the Standard edition up.
  • You would rather own a license than keep paying. Every paid edition can be bought outright, with a year of updates included.
  • You want Elliott Wave tooling in the same platform. EW Lite and Ultimate are built around it.
  • You want the full order-flow toolkit without opening a NinjaTrader brokerage account. The Order Flow edition includes it, from $49/month or $595 one-time.

When NinjaTrader makes more sense

  • You want to backtest strategies without paying for software. NinjaTrader's Strategy Analyzer is part of what it describes as always free. MotiveWave's backtesting starts at PRO.
  • You want a browser or phone to be a first-class way in. NinjaTrader has a web app and native mobile apps alongside Desktop.
  • You will fund a NinjaTrader brokerage account anyway. A funded account includes Order Flow+ and Level I CME Group and EUREX data at no extra software cost.
  • You trade futures and care about per-contract costs. NinjaTrader's paid plans lower its commissions, down to $0.09 per micro contract on Lifetime.

What this comparison doesn't cover

This isn't a broker or commission ranking, and it doesn't cover MotiveWave commissions, which depend on the broker you connect. It doesn't compare mobile apps feature by feature, since our reviews don't establish how either mobile app compares with its desktop software. For TradingView alongside these two, see our futures charting software comparison.

How this was verified

This comparison is based on TradingLoot's two independently researched reviews, each built from the vendor's own pricing pages, documentation, and help resources. MotiveWave was last verified on October 2, 2026 and NinjaTrader on September 28, 2026. Prices, plans, and features change, and where evidence is incomplete this page says so rather than filling the gap.
