What it's for

Charting, strategy backtesting/optimization, and simulated trading for futures, described by NinjaTrader as always free to use, with live trading and real-time data available through NinjaTrader's affiliated brokerage or a documented external broker/data connection on desktop.

Who it's for

  • futures traders who want free charting, backtesting, and simulated trading before committing capital
  • traders building and testing automated strategies with NinjaScript and the Strategy Analyzer
  • traders who want order-flow tools (Order Flow+) integrated with charting, included with a funded NinjaTrader brokerage account or available as a paid add-on
  • traders who want NinjaTrader Desktop connected to a specific external broker or data provider from its documented connection list

Strengths

  • Charting, backtesting, and simulated trading are described by NinjaTrader's own materials as always free to use, with no stated funding condition or time limit attached to that claim.
  • The Strategy Analyzer documents three distinct testing modes — backtest, optimization, and walk-forward optimization — in NinjaTrader's own help guides.
  • NinjaScript enables custom indicator and automated-strategy development inside the platform.
  • Order Flow+ is included at no extra cost with any funded NinjaTrader brokerage account and for existing Lifetime license holders; NinjaTrader's help guide names eight components (Cumulative Delta, Delta Bars, Market Depth Map, Price On Volume Bars, Trade Detector, Volume Profile, Volumetric Bars, and VWAP), while its current support article lists six.
  • NinjaTrader Desktop documents connections to external data feeds and brokers — including Rithmic, Continuum, Barchart, Coinbase, cTrader, eSignal, Forex.com, FXCM, IQFeed, Kinetick, and Interactive Brokers — rather than requiring only NinjaTrader's own brokerage.

Limitations

  • Live market data isn't part of the free software itself: a funded NinjaTrader brokerage account includes Level I CME Group and EUREX data, deeper data such as CME Group Level II is a separate monthly subscription, and without a funded account live data isn't available after the two-week trial.
  • Without a funded NinjaTrader brokerage account, Order Flow+ is a separate $59/month add-on, and NinjaTrader's own documentation lists its components inconsistently (eight in the help guide, six in the current support article).
  • External broker and data-provider connectivity is documented for NinjaTrader Desktop. An equivalent documented connection list for NinjaTrader Web or Mobile wasn't found.
  • Monthly ($99/month) and Lifetime ($1,499 one-time, or four payments of $499) account plans lower per-contract commissions and require a live NinjaTrader brokerage account; on the Free plan, a $35 fee applies if you log in but place no live trade within 30 days, and exchange, clearing, and NFA fees apply on every plan.

Best for

  • Futures traders who want to build, backtest, and simulate strategies at no software cost before risking capital.
  • Futures traders with a funded NinjaTrader brokerage account, who receive Order Flow+ and Level I CME Group and EUREX data at no extra cost.
  • Traders who want to connect NinjaTrader Desktop to one of its documented external data or brokerage connections.

Not ideal for

  • Traders who want a browser-first, multi-asset charting platform as their primary tool.
  • Traders who need NinjaTrader Web or Mobile to match the external broker/data connectivity documented for Desktop.
  • Traders who want Order Flow+ without funding a NinjaTrader brokerage account, since the standalone add-on costs $59/month.

NinjaTrader is a futures-focused charting and trading platform, with software that NinjaTrader describes as free to use for charting, backtesting, and simulated trading, alongside an affiliated brokerage and clearing arm for live trading. The software company and the regulated brokerage are related but separate entities, and this review keeps them distinct throughout.

What NinjaTrader is

NinjaTrader is built around futures: its own materials emphasize Micro E-mini and E-mini contracts (MNQ, MES, MYM, NQ, ES) and access to CME Group and Eurex exchanges. The platform is developed by NinjaTrader, LLC, which also develops the related Tradovate platform. Live trading and account clearing are handled by a separate, regulated affiliate, NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC — the software itself does not hold customer funds. NinjaTrader is available on desktop (Windows only, with multi-monitor support), through a browser-based web app that also runs on a Mac, and on native Android and iPhone apps, though the specific capabilities documented for each vary, as noted throughout this review.

Where NinjaTrader stands out

NinjaTrader’s clearest differentiator is treating charting, backtesting, and simulated trading as free rather than trial-limited: NinjaTrader’s own materials state plainly that the software is “always free to use for advanced charting, backtesting and trade simulation.” We found no separate funding or account condition attached to that specific claim in the materials we reviewed. On top of that, NinjaScript is NinjaTrader’s framework for building custom indicators and automated strategies, and the Strategy Analyzer runs those NinjaScript strategies through three distinct, separately documented modes: a single-run backtest, an iterative optimization across a range of parameter values, and walk-forward optimization, which splits historical data into training and test segments to check whether optimized parameters hold up outside the data they were tuned on. Market Replay steps back through historical data for practice and testing outside of the Strategy Analyzer’s automated runs.

NinjaTrader for futures traders

Futures is the market NinjaTrader’s own materials center on — the homepage and futures-specific pages describe Micro and standard index futures contracts and access to CME Group and Eurex, rather than presenting futures as one of several equally weighted asset classes. That futures-specific framing, paired with an in-house brokerage and clearing arm, sets NinjaTrader apart from a broker-agnostic charting tool: a trader who wants a single, futures-centered environment for charting, testing, and trading has that available here, distinct from connecting a general charting platform to a separately chosen futures broker.

Order Flow+

NinjaTrader’s own help documentation names Order Flow+ as a set of eight tools: Cumulative Delta, Delta Bars, Market Depth Map, Price On Volume Bars, Trade Detector, Volume Profile, Volumetric Bars, and VWAP. Its current support article on subscribing to Order Flow+ lists six — Volume Profile, Volumetric (footprint) bars, VWAP, Cumulative Delta, Trade Detector, and Market Depth Map — without Delta Bars or Price On Volume Bars; we report both lists rather than choose between them. Access depends on your account: Order Flow+ is complimentary with any funded NinjaTrader brokerage account, existing Lifetime license holders already have it, and without a funded account it’s a standalone add-on at $59 a month. For a broader explanation of what order flow means and how these kinds of displays work generally, see our Order Flow guide.

Backtesting, replay, and automation

These are related but distinct capabilities, and NinjaTrader’s own documentation keeps them separate. Backtesting runs a compiled NinjaScript strategy against historical data with fixed parameters. Optimization repeats that process across a range of input values to find better-performing parameters over the same historical period. Walk-forward optimization goes a step further, optimizing on one segment of historical data and then testing the result on a later, separate segment — a way of checking whether a strategy holds up outside the exact data it was tuned on, rather than simply fitting the past. Market Replay is a separate feature for stepping through historical data tick by tick, outside of the Strategy Analyzer’s automated testing modes. All of this runs on NinjaScript, NinjaTrader’s own scripting layer for custom indicators and automated strategies. None of these modes are a guarantee of live results — they test how a strategy would have performed on historical data, not how it will perform going forward.

Platform, brokerage, and data

Three things are worth keeping separate when evaluating NinjaTrader. First, the software: charting, backtesting, and simulated trading are described by NinjaTrader as always free to use; we found no separate funding condition stated for that claim. Second, live market data: a free two-week trial from registration includes live CME Group Level II data; after that, live data requires a funded NinjaTrader brokerage account, which includes Level I CME Group and EUREX data at no extra cost, with deeper data such as Level II as a separate monthly subscription. Third, connectivity: NinjaTrader Desktop documents connections to a number of external brokers and data providers — including Rithmic, Continuum (NinjaTrader’s own CQG-based futures feed), Barchart, Coinbase, cTrader, eSignal, Forex.com, FXCM, IQFeed, Kinetick, and Interactive Brokers — so Desktop isn’t limited to NinjaTrader’s own brokerage and data. We did not find an equivalent, separately documented list of external connections for NinjaTrader Web or Mobile, so we don’t extend that same connectivity claim to those versions of the platform.

What “free” actually means

NinjaTrader’s own claim is that the software is “always free to use for advanced charting, backtesting and trade simulation.” We found no separate funding or account condition attached to that specific claim in the materials we reviewed. It’s a separate question, though, whether everything you’d want alongside that is also free. Live data isn’t part of that claim: beyond the free two-week trial, it requires a funded NinjaTrader brokerage account, which includes Level I CME Group and EUREX data, while deeper data is a separate subscription. In short: the free claim covers the software layer for non-live use; live data depends on funding a brokerage account.

Pricing and trading costs

NinjaTrader’s software is described as always free to use for charting, backtesting, and simulation. Live trading runs through one of three account plans, all of which require a live NinjaTrader brokerage account to upgrade beyond Free: Free ($0/month; $0.39 per micro and $1.29 per standard contract), Monthly ($99/month; $0.29 and $0.99), and Lifetime ($1,499 one-time or four payments of $499; $0.09 and $0.59). Exchange, clearing, and NFA fees apply on every plan, and the Free plan carries a $35 fee if you log in but place no live trade within 30 days. A funded account includes Level I CME Group and EUREX data; NinjaTrader lists its CME Group bundle at $48/month for Level II, and without a funded account Order Flow+ is $59/month. These figures come from NinjaTrader’s support articles as of September 28, 2026; its pricing changed in August 2026, so confirm before relying on them.

Where NinjaTrader falls short

Live data is tied to funding a brokerage account rather than to the free software — a trader relying on the “always free” framing alone could reasonably be surprised that, after the two-week trial, live data requires a funded account. Order Flow+ follows the same line: free with a funded account, $59/month without one. Desktop’s external broker and data connectivity is well documented, but the same isn’t established for Web or Mobile, so a trader planning to work primarily outside the desktop app shouldn’t assume equivalent connectivity. And because software cost, brokerage commissions, and market data are three separate line items rather than one bundled price, budgeting for NinjaTrader takes more than checking a single subscription figure — similar in kind to how we’ve noted the same three-way split for other platforms we’ve reviewed.

Who NinjaTrader is best for

NinjaTrader fits traders who want a futures-centered platform where charting, strategy development, and testing are described as always free to use — and, for traders with a funded NinjaTrader brokerage account, who want order-flow tools and Level I futures data included in that same environment. It also fits traders who specifically want to connect NinjaTrader Desktop to one of its documented external data or brokerage connections, rather than being limited to NinjaTrader’s own brokerage.

Who should look elsewhere

Traders whose primary need is a browser-first, multi-asset charting environment may find a different fit with a platform built around that from the ground up — that’s not a claim that NinjaTrader’s charting is worse, only that its own materials frame it around futures specifically rather than as a generalist multi-asset tool. Traders who need the same depth of external broker and data connectivity on Web or Mobile that’s documented for Desktop should confirm that directly before relying on it, since we couldn’t establish it either way. And any trader budgeting from a single advertised number, rather than software cost, commissions, and data as separate items, should build in that fuller picture first.
