What it's for

Developing, practicing, and testing trading strategies against historical market data through manual trade simulation, historical backtesting, and automated strategy testing (Pro), with a supporting trading journal for reviewing completed sessions.

Who it's for

  • traders who want to practice manual trade execution and risk management against real historical price data
  • traders building or refining a rule-based strategy who want to backtest it before risking capital
  • traders who want automated, robot-based historical strategy testing alongside manual practice, on the Pro tier
  • futures and crypto traders who want dedicated historical backtesting support, available on the Pro tier

Strengths

  • Combines manual historical practice with backtesting and automated strategy testing in one browser-based product, rather than requiring separate tools for each.
  • Up to 23 years of tick-by-tick historical data per symbol, with synchronized multi-chart, multi-timeframe testing built into the core workflow.
  • Blind Testing scrambles dates, prices, and symbol identity (while preserving month, day of week, time, and the underlying price movement), directly addressing the recognition/look-ahead problem that undermines practice on data a trader has already seen.
  • Exit Optimizer systematically tests combinations of stop-loss, take-profit, and holding time against entries and market data, including history imported from other platforms.
  • Runs entirely in the browser with no installation, across Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile, rather than being tied to one operating system.

Limitations

  • Starter's 80 symbols are itemized only down to 70 (28 forex pairs, 16 stocks, 10 indices, 10 ETFs, 6 commodities) in current pricing material; what makes up the remaining roughly 10 symbols isn't specified.
  • Futures and crypto backtesting, along with Exit Optimizer, custom indicators, automation/trading robots, Blind Testing, and prop-firm challenge practice, are all exclusive to the Pro tier — Starter doesn't include any of them.
  • Displayed pricing is billed annually; the $13.25/month and $19.92/month figures shown are annual-billing equivalents, not standalone monthly charges. A separate monthly plan is referenced through a savings comparison on the Pro page, but its exact price isn't shown.
  • The free demo's exact duration and feature restrictions aren't specified on the pages reviewed.
  • Crypto coverage is confirmed for at least BTCUSD and ETHUSD; the current pages don't state a full crypto symbol count.

Best for

  • Traders who want to combine manual historical practice with systematic backtesting in a single browser-based workflow.
  • Traders building a rule-based strategy who want to test stop-loss/take-profit/holding-time combinations (Exit Optimizer) or reduce recognition bias while practicing (Blind Testing), both on Pro.
  • Futures and crypto traders who specifically want historical backtesting support for those markets, which requires the Pro tier.

Not ideal for

  • Traders who want the broadest possible market coverage from the entry-level plan — Starter's 80 symbols are far narrower than Pro's 283, and futures/crypto require Pro specifically.
  • Traders who want a confirmed standalone monthly subscription price before deciding — the current pricing pages emphasize annual billing, and the exact monthly price isn't shown.
  • Traders looking for options-market backtesting — it isn't established as supported on either tier.

Forex Tester Online (FTO) is a browser-based platform for practicing and testing trading strategies against historical market data — combining manual, replay-style trade practice with backtesting and automated strategy testing in one product. It’s a different product from the older Forex Tester desktop application: FTO is the current, browser-based version, and this review covers FTO specifically rather than the legacy desktop software.

What Forex Tester Online is

At its core, FTO lets a trader step through historical market data — pausing, rewinding, and fast-forwarding through it — to either practice trade execution manually or run a strategy against that same data in a more systematic, backtested way. Both modes share the same underlying historical data and charting environment, rather than being separate products bolted together.

Manual historical practice

Trading practice happens directly on historical charts: a trader places simulated market or pending orders, sets stop-loss and take-profit levels, and manages position risk, with FTO simulating the spread, commission, swap, and margin conditions around each trade. Multiple charts, timeframes, and symbols can be synchronized at once, so a setup can be checked across contexts rather than on one chart in isolation. This is simulated trading practice on historical data, and shouldn’t be assumed to reproduce every aspect of live execution.

Backtesting and automation

On the Pro tier, that same historical environment supports automated and semi-automated testing: “trading robots” that run a defined strategy against historical data inside FTO, rather than a person manually clicking through each trade. This automation runs inside the historical-testing environment only — it’s a way of running a strategy against the past faster and more consistently than doing it by hand, not a mechanism for placing live trades. Pro also adds custom indicators, so a strategy’s logic isn’t limited to what ships built into the platform.

Blind Testing

Blind Testing (Pro) is a specific answer to a real problem with historical practice: once you’ve looked at a chart enough times, you start recognizing what happens next, which quietly inflates how well you think a strategy works. Blind Testing scrambles the dates, prices, and symbol identity of the data being tested, while keeping contextual timing cues like the month, day of week, and time, and preserving the actual shape of historical price movement underneath. It’s worth being clear about what this does and doesn’t do: it reduces one specific kind of recognition bias in practice sessions — it doesn’t make a strategy’s results a guarantee of anything going forward.

Exit Optimizer

Exit Optimizer (Pro) takes a set of trade entries and systematically tests different combinations of stop-loss, take-profit, and holding time against the market data around them — either from FTO’s own backtests or from trade history imported from another platform. It’s a way of exploring how sensitive a strategy’s results are to exit rules, not a tool that hands you a single “optimal” exit setting to use going forward; how well any particular combination held up on historical data isn’t a promise about future results.

Markets and historical data

FTO’s Starter plan covers 80 symbols: 28 forex pairs, 16 stocks, 10 indices, 10 ETFs, and 6 commodities, which accounts for 70 of the 80 — the current pricing page doesn’t spell out what the remaining handful of symbols are. Every symbol comes with up to 23 years of tick-by-tick historical data, and Forex Tester’s own product pages cite figures like 600M+ ticks and 2M+ bars per symbol for that dataset — specifications from the vendor, not something independently measured for this review. Data is included with the subscription itself; there’s no separate data add-on to budget for on top of the plan price.

Futures and crypto

Pro expands the symbol universe to 283, adding futures and crypto to the forex/stocks/indices/commodities/ETFs already in Starter. Futures coverage is specifically built out — CME futures, back-adjusted contracts, and rollover handling are all part of it, delivered through the same browser-based backtesting environment as everything else. Crypto coverage is confirmed for at least BTCUSD and ETHUSD with defined historical date ranges; the current pages don’t state a full crypto symbol count, so treat that as the established floor rather than the whole picture.

Trading Journal and analytics

A Trading Journal is built in, organizing testing sessions into projects and trades, with tags, notes, and analysis attached to each one. It’s a supporting piece of the testing workflow — a way to keep track of what was tested and why — rather than the reason someone would choose FTO in the first place; the practice and backtesting engine is the core product, and the journal exists to help make sense of what came out of it.

Starter vs Pro

Starter covers the core workflow: 80 symbols across forex, stocks, indices, ETFs, and commodities, up to 23 years of tick data, up to 10 synchronized charts, unlimited indicators/projects/trades, unlimited data retention and project duration, a global economic calendar, and the simulated spread/commission/swap conditions described above. What Starter doesn’t include is everything that makes FTO a systematic-testing tool rather than just a practice environment: futures and crypto markets, Exit Optimizer, custom indicators, trading robots/automation, Blind Testing, and prop-firm challenge practice are all Pro-only. A trader deciding between the two should be honest about whether they actually need those Pro-specific tools, or whether Starter’s manual practice and backtesting on its narrower symbol set is enough.

Pricing

FTO is sold as an annual subscription. Starter is currently $159/year on promotion, discounted from a displayed reference price of $199/year; Pro is currently $239/year on promotion, discounted from $299/year. Forex Tester states these promotional prices stay locked in at renewal, rather than reverting to the higher reference price afterward. The pricing page also shows monthly-equivalent figures — $13.25 for Starter, $19.92 for Pro — but these are what the annual price works out to per month, not a separate month-to-month plan; a standalone monthly plan is referenced on the Pro page through a savings comparison (“save $144.88 a year compared to the monthly plan”), but its actual price isn’t shown, so this review isn’t going to guess at it.

Free demo and refund

A free demo is available with no credit card required. Exactly how long it lasts and what’s restricted during it isn’t spelled out on the pages reviewed here, so it’s worth checking directly before assuming what you’ll get access to. Paid subscriptions can be cancelled anytime, and Forex Tester backs purchases with a 30-day money-back guarantee, described as a full refund if the platform turns out not to be a fit.

Where it falls short

The clearest gap for a budget-conscious buyer is tier gating: futures, crypto, Exit Optimizer, Blind Testing, custom indicators, and automation are all locked to Pro, so Starter is really a manual-practice-and-basic-backtesting plan rather than the full systematic-testing product. Pricing transparency has a real gap too — the headline monthly-equivalent numbers only apply to annual billing, and the actual standalone monthly price isn’t published anywhere reviewed here. The free demo’s duration and limits aren’t documented either, so there’s no way to know exactly what you’re getting before signing up. And the published Starter breakdown itemizes 70 of its 80 symbols by category — the remaining roughly 10 aren’t broken out in current material.

Best for

FTO fits traders who want manual historical practice and backtesting in the same place, rather than juggling separate tools, and it’s most complete for traders on Pro who specifically want futures or crypto backtesting, automated strategy testing, or tools built to reduce recognition bias (Blind Testing) and explore exit-rule sensitivity (Exit Optimizer).

Who should look elsewhere

Traders who need the widest possible market coverage without paying for Pro should look elsewhere, or budget for the upgrade — Starter’s 80 symbols and lack of futures/crypto is a real constraint. Traders who want a confirmed, published monthly price before committing won’t find one on FTO’s current pricing pages, only the annual plans and their per-month equivalents. And anyone specifically shopping for options-market backtesting won’t find that established here either.
