The Newsfeed: customizable, multi-source real-time news

The Newsfeed can be filtered by source, category, price, market cap, and volume, with desktop notifications and a “Why Is It Moving?” (WIIM) explainer attached to relevant headlines. Its underlying sources include several Benzinga Wire feeds, partner links, press releases, and SEC filings — a broad first-party and wire-service mix rather than a single feed. The full Newsfeed is available on the entry-level Basic plan; Advanced Filtering on top of it requires the Streamlined tier or above.

Audio Squawk: curated, not continuous

Audio Squawk is a live audio broadcast running 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, with Benzinga’s newsdesk reading out selected market-moving headlines and updates. It’s worth being precise about what this is: a curated selection of what the newsdesk judges important, not a continuous stream of every piece of news crossing the wire, and not available outside that daily window. Base “Audio Squawk (Equity)” is included from the Streamlined tier up; a separate, higher-intensity “High Beta Squawk” is an additional $99/month add-on available on Streamlined or Essential.

Scanner and Signals: real-time tools, but Essential-only

The Scanner is a real-time stock scanner with a configurable refresh rate and filters spanning price, market cap, volume, float, relative volume, short interest, and shares outstanding. Signals are real-time, event-triggered alerts — price spikes, options activity, block trades, halts/resumes, opening gaps, and highs/lows — deliverable by browser, sound, or synthesized voice. Both are genuinely useful active-trading tools, but neither is part of the base product: both are exclusive to the top Essential tier ($197/month). A trader on Basic or Streamlined gets the news and alert workflow, not the Scanner or Signals.

Unusual Options Activity: an add-on, not a full options platform

Option Activity as a Signal type requires a separate Unusual Options Activity subscription, priced at $27.97/month, addable after a base subscription begins and billed on that subscription’s own billing cycle. It surfaces through both Signals and the Calendar. This is options-flow alerting — large or notable options trades flagged as they happen — not a full options-chain analysis tool; a trader wanting to analyze specific option contracts or chains in depth would be looking for a different kind of product.

Watchlists and alerts

Watchlists are multiple (effectively unlimited per current account material), each with its own custom sound and email alerts and beginning/end-of-day summary emails, and each can be used to filter the Newsfeed, Calendar, and Signals down to the names a trader actually cares about. Alerts generally — across Newsfeed, Signals, and Watchlists — can be delivered by browser notification, sound, or email, giving a trader some choice in how intrusive or passive that monitoring is.

Chat and community

Benzinga Pro includes a moderated, multi-channel community chat, with topic-oriented rooms covering areas like stocks, day trading, options, and crypto. Basic includes a base “Chat” feature; Essential separately lists an “Elite Trading Community,” though what specifically distinguishes the two tiers of chat access isn’t detailed in Benzinga’s own current pricing material. One thing worth being direct about on scope: Benzinga’s pricing page states that the platform covers stocks, options, futures, and cryptocurrencies, but the individual tools reviewed here — the Scanner, Newsfeed, and Audio Squawk — are described in stock-market terms. A crypto-themed chat room is a discussion space, and this review does not establish crypto or futures coverage for any specific tool.

Research, calendar, and other Essential-tier extras

The Essential tier bundles several additional items on top of Scanner and Signals: Benzinga Edge research, a Market Events Calendar, Insiders data, integration with Benzinga’s research newsletters, Benzinga AI, and a line item named “Sensa Market.” Benzinga describes Benzinga AI as market-trained AI for research and analysis: a trader asks questions about stocks, markets, and finance in plain language and gets answers drawn from market data. Benzinga’s pricing page lists it as an Essential-only feature. “Sensa Market” appears as an Essential-tier line item without an accompanying description of what it includes, and this review doesn’t guess at its functionality. Basic separately includes Benzinga Premium articles as its research content.

Pricing: Basic vs. Streamlined vs. Essential

Benzinga Pro runs three tiers. Basic is $37/month and covers Nasdaq Basic real-time quotes, the full Newsfeed (without Advanced Filtering), Chat, Movers, Watchlist Alerts, and Benzinga Premium articles — a news and awareness product, with no Scanner or Signals. Streamlined is $147/month and adds Advanced Newsfeed filtering and base Audio Squawk. Essential is $197/month and adds Benzinga Edge research, the Real-Time Scanner, Elite Trading Community, Market Events Calendar, Signals, Insiders, research newsletter integration, Sensa Market, and Benzinga AI. On annual billing, Benzinga displays monthly-equivalent prices of $30.58 (Basic), $124.75 (Streamlined), and $166.42 (Essential) — these are the per-month figures only when paying for the full year upfront, not ordinary month-to-month prices. As one concrete example of the annual math: Basic’s annual billing came to $367 billed once, versus $444 for twelve separate $37 monthly charges. The practical point for a buyer is that the $37 headline price gets you real-time news and quotes, not the Scanner or Signals — those specifically require Essential, roughly 5-6x the Basic price.

Add-on costs: High Beta Squawk and Unusual Options Activity

Both add-ons sit outside the tier prices above. High Beta Squawk is $99/month, available on Streamlined or Essential. Unusual Options Activity is $27.97/month, addable to a qualifying subscription after it begins. A trader on Essential who wants both would be looking at $197 plus $99 plus $27.97 — roughly $324/month before any annual-billing discount — worth budgeting for explicitly rather than assuming it’s bundled into the Essential price.

The 14-day trial — and what happens if you forget to cancel

Benzinga Pro advertises a 14-day free trial, and Benzinga says all tools are unlocked during it, the Scanner and Signals included. Signing up requires a card or PayPal. If the trial isn’t cancelled, it automatically converts into a paid Essential subscription at $197/month, and ongoing subscriptions generally auto-renew unless cancelled before the next renewal date. Benzinga’s own wording on cancelling is inconsistent. The trial FAQ says to “cancel anytime before the trial ends and you won’t be charged.” The checkout terms say subscriptions “may be cancelled by giving notice of non-renewal at least 30 days in advance” by email. How these two statements fit together isn’t explained, so it’s unclear whether the FAQ’s cancel-anytime wording or the 30-day notice applies to a trial; anyone starting one should confirm the cancellation process with Benzinga beforehand. Separately from the trial, Benzinga’s own materials indicate a Free level exists: the pricing page describes Basic as “Every Free Feature Plus” additional features, and Benzinga’s help center lists a Free level with delayed quotes, a search-only Benzinga Wire newsfeed, a watchlist, current-session movers, a details tool, and a chart. That help article dates from May 2024 and the current pricing page doesn’t list the Free level’s features, so what it includes today, and how to sign up for it, isn’t confirmed here.

Where Benzinga Pro falls short

The clearest gap for a budget-conscious buyer is tier gating: the Scanner and Signals, arguably the two most “active trading” tools in the product, only exist on the $197/month Essential tier, not the $37 or $147 tiers. Audio Squawk is curated and time-boxed rather than a full continuous stream. Unusual Options Activity and High Beta Squawk both add real cost on top of a subscription, and the total can climb quickly for a trader who wants the full feature set. One Essential-tier item, Sensa Market, is named without any description of what it includes, so a buyer can’t fully evaluate it from the pricing page alone. And the free trial comes with a card requirement and an automatic conversion to a paid plan, which requires active cancellation to avoid a charge.

Who Benzinga Pro is best for

Benzinga Pro fits traders whose workflow is built around reacting to real-time news and market-moving events — reading, listening, or getting alerted to them as they happen — rather than traders whose starting point is charting or systematic scanning. It’s most complete for active US stock day traders willing to pay for the Essential tier, where the Scanner and Signals sit alongside the news and alert workflow, and for traders who want options-flow alerts added to that same workflow through the Unusual Options Activity add-on.

Who should look elsewhere

Traders whose main need is deep charting or backtesting should look elsewhere — Benzinga mentions charting tools but doesn’t document their depth, and backtesting is not an established Benzinga Pro capability. Anyone who specifically wants the Scanner or Signals should budget for the Essential tier rather than assuming the $37 entry price includes them, and anyone hoping to trial the product without a payment method won’t find that option confirmed here. Benzinga’s Free level, which sits below Basic, doesn’t include the Scanner or Signals.
